Q: My fiancee and I are planning our wedding. She is Catholic, but I am agnostic. Because I don't mind either way, I agreed to get married in a Catholic Church because that's what she wants. However, she says I need to be baptized and have my first communion and confirmation or else the Church won't do it. Is this true? I thought the Church would still marry you, it just wouldn't be considered a sacrament? I don't really want to do it because I dislike the Catholic Church and i think it would be hypocritical of me to convert. Besides, she's not even exactly a devout Catholic.
A: YOU DO NOT NEED TO CONVERT!!!!!! I am getting married in a Catholic church by my retired priest that did all of my other catholic sacraments. The current priest gave me permissions. My Fiance' was hesitant at first. He was raised Evangelical Christian and has not been a church goer for a while. He is doing this for ME... because that is what me and my family always dreamed of. Ask the priest before you say no!!! We thought for sure he would have to convert, and our priest said absolutely not!!! My Fiance' said he would NEVER convert if that's what it meant. For our wedding, because he is not Catholic, we cannot have a Catholic Mass, but we can have a ceremony, like most people do. What does this mean? We just can't have the bread and wine at the wedding, which is fine because 1/2 of the people attending are not Catholic anyways!!! We will still have the bible readings and everything else that everyone else has at their wedding. ASK First!!! I understand that each church / priest is different and you should know that too. Good Luck with your wedding and marriage and God Bless.
